Electro Before Electro Was Electro
Electro is a term that gets thrown around rather loosely these days. Artists like Kraftwek were the real pioneers. Afrika Bambaataa and mantronix pioneered in the U.S. Back in the early eighties a movement called electro hop surfaced. It started out on the west coast with groups like the world class wreckin cru (which dr. dre was a member of). Ice-T also had his start there (see above picture). Unfortunately it was all but gone by 87 or 88. Much of it, to me seems over the top and hard to take really seriously. That’s exactly what makes it so good. Tons of vocoder, synths, drum machines, how can you go wrong?
