I’m a product of the eighties. I remember playing the original NES system at friends houses. The 8 bit graphics were sweet (or so I thought). Does anybody remember the R.O.B., the power pad or the power glove? Robots were huge. It’s crazy how far things have come. It’s great that 8 bit sounds and art have been making their way back into the limelight. One of my favorite bands from the eighties is Newcleus. They came around during the first wave of electro, you might know their song ‘jam on it.’ Lots of synths, space, and robots. In a sec I’ll talk about a few current artists keeping it authentic. Dubmood (Kalle Jonnson) is a chiptune artist from Sweden (though he now lives in Marseille, France). He started putting out music in 1996 (at the age of 11!). His stuff is really authentic bit stuff. I could imagine hearing while playing excite bike or something like that. Beyond the pure nostalgic and aesthetic value I find chiptune music interesting in that it forces the artist to get more creative. Due to the sheer smallness of the sound chips there really aren’t that many options for different sounds and combination. Dubmood’s songs definitely have some depth. Check it (there’s a bunch, but most of them are pretty short).
