Brazilian Electrocution

lh_deathdisco
So, Brazil has produced some amazing music (Funk Carioca, Samba, etc. ). I’ve been interested in it for a bit. The metal scene caught my ear first. My favorite being Sepultura (The early stuff is sick, arise!). To keep it manageable we’ll narrow this post to two, Mixhell and Database. So, have at it.

Sepultura (which means grave in Portuguese) has been around since the mid 80′s. Now fast forward to 2006 when the drummer Iggor Cavelera leaves (his older Max brother left in 96). Now Iggor and his wife Laima Leyton start mixhell, an electro and remix group. A metal drummer doing electro? Need I say more? It’s haard electro with a Brazilian beat and the mixes are unbelievably sweet (the XLR8R podcast starts with maiden!). Check out an interview here. I really enjoy the database remix of dance, chewy chocolate cookies remix, and the mixes. This stuff isn’t super new(its been like 15 blog years), but it’s stayed relevant (still around my hard drive). I hope to hear more soooon.

the kids are alright – mixhell

profondo rosso – chewy chocolate cookies (mixhell remix)

ain’t nobody cooler – CLP (mixhell remix)

Database is an up and coming duo from Sao Paulo, Brazil. A dance project by producers Yuri Chix and Lucio Morais would probably be the best way to describe it. They just released an EP (10/15/08), feedback noise, that’s pretty taste electro (available digi-only on itunes). I haven’t been able to find out too much about them. Definitely a different style then mixhell, but they still bring the fire (a little french electro maybe?). Plus they have a free re-edit album up on their myspace page right now (get it before its gone). They’ve put a lot out on blogs, not all of it is good, but I can’t deny that their good songs are dipped in gold. Most of the earlier stuff is straight electro, but lately its been pure disco. A pretty serious change, but I think it suits their sound waay better. Check.
