I'm burnin up! (Bird Peterson Interview)

So, a couple weekends ago bird peterson was in town for a moongoons event. We’ve been fans for a grip now, some of our first posts centered around him (check here). The moongoons and red bull threw a riverdance boat party(5/6/09) and we got to see the moon goons and bird peterson dj on a boat floating down the Mississippi (thanks jonathan ackerman). All stops were pulled out, both bird and the moon goons threw down! Lots of early electro, disco, hip hop and such. We had a great time, and contacted bird about an interview. Bird Peterson, as an artist, has had an interesting go so far. He’s been shown a ton of love throughout the blogosphere, and carved out a name for himself. Many taste tracks and remixes have been dropped and a few eps to boot. My first tastes were his baltimore remixes, but he’s gone on to make to some great remixes that incorporate bassline, dubstep, and hip hop. He opened for MSTRKRFT on their most recent ‘fist of god’ tour, and will play at the end of this month with SMD, Diplo, Boys Noize, etc. It’s great to have him come to the minneap. Bird has forged his own path, and been successful (where many have not). His music speaks for itself, def fans of zutopong and the project pat remix. As a result I was totally interested to hear his point of view. Soooo, here ’tis

1. aside from music, any hobbies? favorite food or restaurant?
Graphic design and movies.I love movies so damn much. I love thai food. I eat way too much of it.
2. Where did your tastes start as a producer/DJ and where are they heading? Are there any key experiences that pushed you to pursue music as a career?
yes. Three things: Fatboy Slim – Better Living Through Chemistry, Unkle – Psyence Fiction, Danny The Wildchild – Zig Zag Part 1. These three albums are the foundation of my entire musical journey. I suggest everyone listen to all of them.
3. What kind of setup do you use for live shows? production? Any favorite programs or equipment?
Mostly turntables and an 800. But im about to start mixing in live synths and effects. Its gonna be epic! I just bought the entire Korg Nano series for the live shows.
4. The music blog scene is a tough one. There are tons of artists and blogs that come and go. Despite this, you’ve managed to find steady notoriety and success, how’d you do it?
Honestly i don’t know, haha. I just tried to stand out. Made my own sound and pushed it as hard as i could.
5. I first really got into your baltimore remixes, but your tracks have also incorporated bassline, and a bit of dubstep too (love zutopong), is anyone more challenging to work with? how’d you get into them?
I’ve been doing all these different types for a while. But the Bmore was flavor of the moment, so i stuck with that for a bit. Now i’m trying to incorporate everything into one sound. I mainly just want my jams to be insanely funky. Anything i have to do i do for the sake of these jams!
6. You travel quite a bit, do you have a favorite venue or city? Where do you find the most love? What keeps you going?
i love Minneapolis. It’s such a fun city. Really great people there. Jonathan Ackerman is like a brother to me and i love anytime i get to spend with him. San Diego is amazing too. So is Phoenix and Denver. I mainly just love the people. I meet so many cool people in every city! Good times, good times. Also, i LOVE exploring record shops in different cities.
7. When your putting together a set these days what are you incorporating, what’s killing on the dance floor? During your set at the boat party you dropped a chopped version of the ‘what happened to that boy’ beat, what was that(amazing)?
It was by a guy named DJ Amphibious. It’s off the hook! You know, you just got to get stuff everyone loves, but has never heard. I would tell you a few, but that would be falling into your trap. NO DICE!
8. What artists are you most excited about these days? Who do think has owned 2009?
Royksopp, Propagandhi, Phoenix, Felix Cartal, Jack Beats, Morse Code (Fuzion Batches 1 & 2, SO GREAT), The Bulgarian, Major Lazer. This has been a really great time for music.
9. I’ve touched on blogging but there has been a huge jump in technology and connectivity (twitter, serato, iphones, etc.) how has that impacted or changed your music and everyday life?
More branches on the ‘Sell Yourself” tree. The Bird Peterson Iphone app is almost ready!!!
10. What’s next? Any projects coming out or live shows your excited about? Do you have a dream collab or a dream show? The show on the 27th with diplo, boys noize, and SMD sounds amazing.
Yes, so much in the works. I can’t talk about it just yet, but i will make sure your blog knows about it when i do! And yeah, that show on the 27th is gonna be fuuuuun! See you on the next boat!

Thanks all! Also check out the moon goons blog, they’ve been posting some nice mixes from curtis vodka, and the wurst djs. They’re always throwing sweet events at the kitty kat club, 7th st or other various twin city locales. Big up!

I am a HUGE Bird fan. I CAN’T BELIEVE I didn’t know about this event. Enough self-loathing and disappointment. I’m sure he tore the place apart. Much respect to Minneapolis for improving the outlook for the long-tail of the Electro and Bass scenes. EZ.

Yeah, the moon goons are doing some really cool events, I’d keep my eye on them. They’ve brought in some crazy talent, and their sets are really solid
